"I have the habit of noting down what I see."

Catching sight of a sheaf of notes on his table, Herid drew it to him with his
fingertips and began reading, frowning and shaking his head. The notes looked
to be in his own hand, but he did not seem to agree with them anymore.

Why an Archive of Characters?
Ten books in the series (to date), plus a Guide and two short stories: 138 web pages; 1761 characters and more around the corner. Two and a half years to initially create with endless updating. Who knows why I did it! =)

Robert Jordan and The Wheel of Time
Robert Jordan is an author of fantasy literature, who's most famous work is The Wheel of Time. This is a series of 10 books (so far) plus other add ons, whose scope and complexity is quite extraordinary.
They consist of:
  1. The Eye of the World
  2. The Great Hunt
  3. The Dragon Reborn
  4. The Shadow Rising
  5. The Fires of Heaven
  6. Lord of Chaos
  7. A Crown of Swords
  8. The Path of Daggers
  9. Winter's Heart
As well, Robert Jordan has written the short story "New Spring" which is available in Legends (a book of 11 short stories by best selling fantasy novelists, edited by Robert Silverberg), and "Strike at Shayol Ghul" which is available on the internet at http://www.tor.com/shayol.html. He and Theresa Patterson also produced "The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time", which chronicles some of the history and cultures of the world The Wheel of Time is set in.

Statistics
I started collecting the names together in December 1997. Off and on, it took me 2 years 4 months to gather and collate all names up to Path of Daggers, including New Spring and create the web site. The most used name is Jaim and Jon, both with 5 occurrences. Of surnames, there are 12 Aybaras, including Faile, and 11 Lewins.

In all there are 1761 separate and individual characters. This excludes aliases, and name changes. Lanfear is counted as 1, even though she is also listed as Selene, KeillI Shaogi, Meiren Eronaile and Cyndane. It cannot be proven if she is Silvie or not, so she is counted separately until further information is given. Also, now we have Elan Morin Tedronai, Ishamael, Ba'alzamon, Jalwin Moerad and Moridin, all counted as one person.

Filing and Finding Listed Names
Listed A-Z by First Name
Where an honorary title is given without a first name, the person will be listed with their title. For example "Mother" for village healers. If a first name is given, then the person is always listed under that first name, ignoring the title, except in the case of the Mandragorans. I have included the "el" and "al" with Akir and Lenna, but have listed them under A and L respectively. Without a first name or a title, the person will be listed under M for Mistress or Master Soandso.

Listed A-Z by Last Name
Characters with three names from the AOL have been filed under their middle name. For example Nemene Damendar Boann is listed under D. Much of the AB characters have been left out of this list with only first names. Aemon al Caar al Thorin is the same as Loial son of Arant son of Haman - all first names, and therefore not included. After the ABs I have gone for the last name. Tylin Quintara Mitsobar is definately from House Mitsobar, and I have applied the same rule to Alliandre and Ethenielle. An exception is the case of Artur Hawkwing's family, which are the Paendrags.

Listed in Order of Appearance
Characters are listed in the order in which the books were published. So after A Crown of Swords comes: The Strike and Shayol Ghul; The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time; The Path of Daggers; New Spring; and then Winter's Heart. To make matters more confusing, the extra chapter of Ravens in the split version of The Eye of The World came between Winter's Heart and Crossroads of Twilight. So that chapter is stuck between two books out on its lonesome.

Inferences
"Son of" or "daughter of" prefixes that were once add ons to the full name but have now become part of the full name I have ignored. So Metarra din Junalle is under J. Otherwise all Sea Folk would be under D in the surname list. When there is an apostrophe between the prefix and the name, I have included the prefix - Paet al'Caar is under A.

Elaida do Avriny a'Roihan. Is she of House Avriny, or House a'Roihan? The "do" is probably a throw back to a "son of" from the ABs, but so would the "a" in "a'Roihan", as "al'Caar" is from "Aemon al Caar" or similar. As Avriny is by itself without the "a" prefix, I have filed her under A, with the same rule for all Murandy nobles. RJ hasn't provided any "from House ..." for Murandians yet, so only he knows if I'm correct.

Guesses
Elaida's placement is easy compared to Sereine dar Shamelle Motara. Along the same line of thought but as she is from the ABs, it is mostly a guess to put her under S. Motara may have been an honourific in the AOL style, and Shamelle may be her mother's name. This would give her the name of Sereine daughter of Shamelle 'Great Author' - no surname. Only RJ knows.

Aes Sedai Allegiances
If you have seen some of the Aes Sedai character information, you will have noticed that at the beginning of each individual's characteristic information I have added the name "Egwene" or "Elaida". I have done this to identify the allegiances of these women during the Tower split. But I have put the names of the two women specifically because:
  1. If I used "Tower" and "Salidar" they will become confusing. There will come a time in the story when "Tower" won't immediately mean anything - Elaida's foretelling. Indeed it could be said that references to Salidar are now out of step.
  2. Realistically the two factions are based around the opposite Amyrlins. Because of the hierarchical nature of Aes Sedai, it is easy to comprehend a group via their leader, and that leader's opposition to the other Amyrlin. And anyway, in the narrative the fight is concentrated around those two figures.
Anyway, someday the Aes Sedai will all be together once more, when all of the ships come back to the shore. They realise something they've always known: they still call the Tower home (thanks Peter Allen). I am guessing that when the tower is again whole and one, the knowledge of a person's previous choices will be of interest for deciphering plots or whatever.

Possible Mistakes by RJ (or me?)
There are many names that double up. If there is the possibility that two people with the same name are different people I have listed them as such. For example, Neysa Ayellin is listed twice, both from Emonds Field. One is described as horse faced, the other is as beautiful as Egwene and a similar age. Although a few people have tried to tell me this is the same person, I am yet to see a convincing argument. =)

Another example is Master Aydaer. He is first mentioned by Perrin in tEotW as a master cabinet maker. Later Pel Aydaer is introduced in TSR as a bald headed man who taught Perrin to catch trout with his hands. Is this the same person? The spelling is quite unique, so I have said yes. However this is only an estimation. Again only RJ knows for sure.

There are possible mistakes made by RJ as well. Ethenielle is listed as Kirukon Materasu in The Strike at Shayol Ghul, in The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time, she was Cosaru Noromago. Is one her maiden name? However, this is obviously the same person. Again people have tried to say otherwise, but I'm still waiting for the convincing argument. =)

Hu Marwin died in the Trolloc ambush in the Waterwood. However he turned up later, apparently missing the ambush and not wanting to join the Companions. Is this two people, of the same age, or a mistake? Considering they are both the same age, I have listed them as one. Others:

  1. Therava, a Wise one, has both grey hair, and white streaked dark red hair.
  2. Eward Candwin and Edward Candwin. The same person? Again I have guessed yes.
  3. Jain Charin and Jaim Charin. Everyone knows Jain Farstrider, Jaim just doesn't look right.
  4. Ituralde, Ilteralde and Iteralde. These names popped up occasionally. I have spelled it Rodel Ituralde only because that was how he was introduced to us originally.
    See below.
  5. Elaida. She is the youngest daughter of a minor Murandian noble House. But her country of origin is also mentioned as being Altara.
  6. Lopin is very round, but he has also been described as bony.
  7. Endara Casalain and Joal Ramedar. Their relationships to each other and to Ishara changed from Lord of Chaos to the Guide. In LoC they were married, in the Guide they were father/daughter. Unless there is some ickyness going on.
  8. Is Daigian's surname Moseneillin or Moseneille?
  9. How can Ishara be black skinned, as mentioned in Winter's Heart, when the Andoran Royal line are all red haired and white skinned? Though this is probably not a mistake but a specific statement by RJ, it seems to make little sense.
Often the name I have placed a character under is what RJ has mentioned more often, most recently and/or in the Glossary. But there is the exception to every rule: Jain Charin has recently been called Jaim by RJ, but he was Jain for so long, that I can only believe it is a typo. Considering the number of different characters in the series, a mistake or two isn't bad.

Ituralde, Iterulde and Ilteralde. When I brought the names together I found the similarities and decided they must be the same person: all from Arad Doman, all powerful and all in the army. Too much coincidence. Of course, the spellings have all since been corrected to be matching. Rodel Ituralde was first mentioned in The Fires of Heaven. And now, some five books later in Crossroads of Twilight, we finally meet the man.

Update Notes

Crossroads of Twilight
January 2003
I think RJ is reading my web site. I have said before that Rodel Ituralde will be something big at some point. And here he is. Yay! Also, in my WH notes I asked where Samitsu had gone. And now here she is, also in the Prologue, with RJ trying to pretend he hadn't forgotten about her.

27 December 2002
There seems to be a problem with the search form not working offline. I hadn't noticed this before, and no one has sent an email to me mentioning it. I have corrected it, and i just hope this hasn't been happening all along.

Joel V. Ernest DeYoung
December 2002
In an email some months back, Joel mentioned a few spelling mistakes and the like, and asked if I wanted more proof reading. I thanked him for the corrections and said yes, always lacking proof readers because of the difficulty of the work. I wasn't expecting much more, if anything. What I have just received is five pages with corrections on everything from missing characters to spelling mistakes - and he has only gone through 12 pages so far! Thank you so much Joel. I'll have to put up a statue in your honour.

One of the more important parts of Joel's corrections is mistaken characters. Corein doesn't exist, and has been deleted because he is just Corevin with a missing 'v'. Furthermore, I missed Musenge from Winter's Heart. So the character count doesn't change with one deleted and one added. Ack! I spoke too soon. One more character to be added: Adria.

Gees, Joel. You are showing me just how poor my spelling and grammar can be! Every time I have tried to spell check the web site, I either got bogged down on the names themselves, or on words such as Aes and Sedai and Valon and Trolloc and so on. There are hundreds like that, and I just gave up.

03 July 2002
It has been pointed out to me that the spelling of Tiasa has been incorrect. It has now been changed to the correct spelling of Taisa.

Ravens
20 June 2002
Well, I did it. I went and purchased both From The Two Rivers, and To The Blight. Even though I said I wouldn't. I still think it is a money grubbing effort, but I was concerned that the only store I could find with these books would soon sell out - the books weren't published in Australia, and the only available copies were imported from the USA! So I have added the eight new characters.

As well, the extended glossary now has Jain Farstrider going to the Blight in 981NE, instead of the 978ish in Loial's tale from EotW, or 994NE from previous glossaries. Also Taringail no longer died in a hunting accident, but disappeared mysteriously! Consistancy RJ, consistancy! It's not much to ask.

10 June 2002
I keep finding characters in a re-read which I have missed previously - at least a dozen. As well, I have added the Seeker for Truth who has been on the trail of Suroth, Egeanin and Bethamin. While his name isn't known (yet?), he certainly does have a role to play tying together many Seanchan threads (in the same way the Gholam doesn't have a name, but keeps cropping up in the plot), and forcing Bethamin, Egeanin, Seta and Renna all to flee Ebou Dar.

10 April 2002
I am annoyed at myself. it has just been pointed out to me that I missed a character in The Great Hunt. While she hasn't been mentioned again, Maigan is clearly referenced. I never picked up on it - either the first time around, or in subsequent TGH re-reads.

Winter's Heart
July 2001
With so many people mentioned, I have added a new page for members of Cairhien's Acadamy.

I have just found Dapple missing from the index. Her details were on the wolves page, but not on any list. Oops, same for Bethamin.

Hu Marwin was killed in TSR in the waterwood. Now he is tracking Faile in WH in Amadicia.

I have added a new page for Elayne's Bodyguard. I haven't included Daved Hanlon because I beleive he will move on and moving characters around is annoying.

Rand has been stated as having curly hair to his neck. Must have received a perm at the local salon.

I missed Eadwin and didn't put him in at beginning of Path of Daggers. Oops. I have added a new page for Far Madding characters including this one.

Merise was introduced so calmly, I thought she was an existing character. But she hasn't been mentioned previously. So who is she and where did she come from? Also, what happened to Samitsu? Wasn't she one of Cads favorite companions?

I have decided to add the Gholam to the Shadowspawn page. We are being shown his distinctive personality. Was Mordeth a gholam that worked free of having to follow orders? Of course, could Padan Fain couldn't possibly merge with a gholam.

Noal Charin is Jain Charin. I am almost certain.

Lopin is very round and also bony! Does this mean he lost weight after Nalesean's death?

I have added Slayer to the site. Previously I divided information between Luc and Isam, but I figure they really became something new when they merged.

RJ likes to confuse me. Banner-General Furyk Karede of the Deathwatch Guard was housed at the Wandering Woman. Later Riselle marries Banner-General Lord Yamada. I have descriptions of neither prior to WH, and have a description of one of them, yet I don't know which one. Yamada is a lovely singer who has attracted Riselle, while Furyk doesn't suffer fools, as he showed with Jadranka. With one of the features being a pleasant face, I must assume Yamada is also in the Deathwatch Guards and has a pleasant face. I wouldn't think a cold man like Furyk would have a pleasant face, but then again he might. I also wonder if property can marry. And would a Deathwatch Guard sing? Thanks for the clarity RJ!

I am becoming careless. I almost missed the fact that Demandred is not Taim. Otherwise he would have recognised Damer near Shadar Logoth! I also almost missed the reference to Moridin being Ishamael. Makes me wonder if I have missed anything else obvious.

Pet Gripe. Just looking through other character lists on the net. They profess to have the most characters. Bullshit. They usually have half the number that exist. Just by looking at the first few characters in the list, I can find many ommisions.

Netscrape Nevergettinganywhere vs
Monopoly's Intopocket Expander

Bloody Netscape Navigator. It gives me nothing but trouble. Paralleling Microsoft with Netscrape is a complete pain. It shits me to tears. Many hours have been spent fixing glitches with ridiculous reasons in Netscrape. Getting the two browsers to see things similarly has been a nightmare. Even getting approximations have sometimes been bloody stupid! in the end, IE is easier to please than NN, and I think this site looks better in IE. I have also been told the site looks good in Opera. =)     Back to the Archive.
